Fact-finding study of the All Japan Judo Kata Championship
(Studie zur Untersuchung der All Japan Judo Kata Championship)
This Study reviewed the literature to elucidate the development of kata competitions in Japan, with the aim of obtaining basic knowledge to be applied in the future dissemination of kata instruction. Information was extracted from articles and other documents related to the All Japan Judo Kata Championship. The following information was clarified.
1. The All Japan Judo Kata Championship was the first national kata competition in Japan, and the first competition was held at the Kodokan Judo Institute in 1997, following a proposal by the Educational Promotion Committee of the All Japan Judo Federation.
2. The All Japan Judo Kata Championship was held 23 times between 1997 and 2022 (excluding 2007, 2020, and 2021) at the Kodokan Judo Institute.
3. Support has been provided by the Japan Judo Therapist Association (1997-2022), the Asahi Shimbun (1997-2019), the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (2001-2015), and the Japan Sports Agency (2016-2022).
4. The number of katas to be performed was three for the 1st championship (1997), four for the 2nd through 10th championships (1998-2006), and seven for the 11th championship (2008) and thereafter.
5. The number Of participant Pairs was Iowest in the Ist championship (1997) with 30 pairs (60 competitors) and highest in the 22nd championship (2019) With 97 Pairs (194 competitors).
6. The number of judges per kata was highest in the 2nd championship (1998) at 10 and Iowest in the 11th championship (2008) at 5.
7. The total number of participant pairs across all competitions (1997-2022) was 1,432 (2,864 competitors) and the total number ofjudges was 746.
8. The number of mats was one in the 1st and 2nd championships (1997-1998), two in the ,3rd through 10th championships (1999-2006), and three in the 11th championship (2008) and thereafter.
9. The Kodokan Judo Institute's competition rules have been used since the 16th
championship (2013).
Nearly all quantifiable aspects of the All Japan Judo Kata Championship have shown increasing trends, suggesting that the scale ofthe competitions is expanding. In future work, we will investigate the status of international kata championships in order to clarify global trends in kata competitions.
