The effect of training on the activity of creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LD) and uric acid concentration in plasma of elite boxers
(Die Auswirkung von Training auf die CK- und LD-Aktivität und die Harnsäurekonzentration im Plasma von Boxern des Hochleistungsbereichs)
Purpose
The aim of the present study was to examine the rate of changes in the activity of creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase and uric acid concentration in plasma during boxing training.
Basic procedures
The study was conducted over 13 consecutive days in a training camp before the 1999 World Championship with the participation of eight elite boxers. The daily training loads were rated using arbitrary units. Blood was taken from the earlobe every morning after a night?s rest. The activity of creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LD) and uric acid concentration in plasma were determined using commercial kits.
Main findings
It was found that the rate of changes for the plasma CK activity was more pronounced than for the LD activity, and that the correlation between the CK and LD activities (r = 0.84) was significant (p < 0.05). It was shown that the daily training loads correlated (p < 0.05) with both the CK and the LD activity (r = 0.70 and 0.64, respectively). No relationship was found between the daily training loads, the CK and LD activities and the uric acid concentrations in plasma.
Conclusions
The effect of opposing factors such as increased ATP hydrolysis during intensive exercise and simultaneous uric acid uptake by the muscle limits the diagnostic value of uric acid concentration during training in sport practice. However, it seems that plasma CK activity measured over consecutive days of boxing training is likely to be useful for the evaluation of the local muscle stress.
