Physiological and performance changes in female high level judo athletes preparing to Pan-American Games
(Physiologische und Leistungsveränderungen weiblicher Hochleistungsjudoka in Vorbereitung auf die Panamerika-Spiele)
This study evaluated physiological and performance changes in 5 judo athletes of the Brazilian Female Team who took part in the Pan-American Games (1999). Before the competition, they were evaluated for two months (May and June) in the following variables:
1. aerobic (treadmill test) - VO2 peak and velocity of anaerobic threshold (VAT);
2. anaerobic (2 bouts of upper body Wingate Test with 3 min interval between them) - mean power (MPb1 and MPb2), peak power in each bout (PPb1 and PPb2), total work (TW) and blood lactate (LA) after bout 2;
3. sport specific situation - LA during (15 min) passive recovery after a judo combat, index in the Special Judo Fitness Test (SJFT) and LA after this test.
Comparison was made with the Wilcoxon matched pairs tests. MP and PP was similar in bout 1 and 2. Laboratory variables (VO2 peak, VAT, MPb1 and MPb2, PPb1 and PPb2, TW) did not change in this period, but peak LA after 2nd Wingate bots decreased (May: 11.1±0.3mM; June: 8.7±0.8mM; p < 0.05). In the sport specific situations, there was an improvement (p < 0.05) in the percentage of LA removal (May: 34.5±6.4%;June: 49.0±7.9%) and a decrease (p<0.05) in the index of SJFT (May: 13.09±1.55; June: 12.62±1.48). The results indicate that the sport specific evaluations are important to detect changes in the final phase of training for high level competitions.
