Periodization in ski training - With special emphasis on optimizing the training puzzle in order to become a better skier

(Periodisierung des Skitrainings: Mit speziellem Augenmerk auf der Optimierung des Trainingspuzzles, um ein besserer Skiläufer zu werden (Abstract))

This presentation will provide an overview of Swedish Olympic ski training, from regular basic training in the preparation period up to the competition period. It will also cover some current ideas and development trends as regards training planning, periodization and tapering. Two of the main training principles in improving an athlete's capacity are load and continuity. An increased training load can be achieved in different ways, by increasing and/or changing volume, intensity and frequency. High performance training of skiers with an extraordinary complex combination of training qualities, such as strength, endurance and technique, places high demands on the skiers` and the trainers` knowledge of how to optimize load and recovery and to place different training elements properly in the different training blocks. The complexity of modern skiing is further challenged by contemporary athletes` more compact racing schedule, including frequent travel and alternations between different types of races/disciplines. Altogether, this increases the need for good education and appropriate pedagogical monitoring aids in order to guide high performance skiers in their training, so as to help them achieve success in competition.
