On-Field sports emergencies
Preventative medicine through preparticipation physical evaluations plays a critical role in screening for conditions that may be life-threatening or predispose to injury or illness.
An emergency action plan (EAP) is fundamental for a medical team to prepare and respond to an emergency and prevent catastrophic fatalities.
There is a legal basis for developing and applying an EAP, and the absence of one has been the basis for negligence claims and lawsuits.
EAP preseason training allows the team to practice various on-field scenarios and develop cohesion in preparation for athletic events throughout the season.
Preparation and readiness for on-field emergencies are accomplished through attention to detail, self-assessments, leadership, and communication. A well-educated and devoted medical team and sufficient rehearsal ensure sideline emergency response competency.
