Acute and chronic effects of blood flow restricted high-intensity interval training: A systematic review

(Akute und chronische Effekte von durchblutungsbeschränktem hochintensivem Intervalltraining: Eine systematische Überprüfung)

Key Points 1. Acute responses of BFR + sprint-based protocols include the acceleration of fatigue mechanisms associated with repeated sprint exercise protocols, possibly impairing performance. However, the extent of impairment differs between upper and lower limbs due to differences in sensitivity to oxygenation and vascular responses. 2. Implementing BFR into HIIT can enhance chronic performance adaptations in aerobic and muscular parameters, whereas improvements in anaerobic components may only be limited to the inclusion of BFR in submaximal exercise interventions. 3. There is a necessity for future research to explore and recommend standardised BFR guidelines for each HIIT exercise type.
