The role of carbohydrates in ensuring the relationship between the relative contribution of the energy systems and characteristics of training and competitive loads in high performance sports
(Die Rolle der Kohlenhydrate bei der Gewährleistung des Verhältnisses zwischen dem relativen Beitrag der Energiesysteme und den Merkmalen des Trainings und der Wettkampfbelastung im Hochleistungssport)
Objective. To form an idea of the relationship between the relative contribution of different carbohydrate metabolic pathways of energy supply and characteristics of training and competitive loads.
Methods. Analytical processing of the data from scientifc literature related to the studied issue.
Results. The authors pointed out that the mechanisms of anaerobic energy supply during exercise have been studied to a greater extent than the aerobic pathways of energy production. Based on the analysis of literature data, the author showed that anaerobic metabolism in the active muscles actually take place in a closed system. Potential power output and duration of work are determined by internal reserves of energy substrates: ATP, CP, and glycogen, which are especially important for anaerobic competitive activities. During aerobic exercise, the energy systems in the skeletal muscles function in an open system. Oxygen is delivered to the muscles by transport in blood, which also provide for the exchange of energy substrates between the muscles and other parts of the body. Therefore, the total amount of energy produced during such work depends on both endogenous reserves of energy substrates in muscle tissue and their intake from blood.
Conclusion. Changes in the energy production, transport, and utilization under the influence of sports training are signifcant and actually affect all parts of metabolism, but a lot of questions about the relationship between the relative contribution of different energy system and the contribution of a particular system to the energy supply of skeletal muscle contraction remain unresolved.
