The purpose of the study was to determine the influence of putter offset on putting performance. Twenty-nine right-handed golfers executed 24 putts with a putter that had no offset and 24 putts with a putter that had a relatively large offset. The motion of the golfer`s head, feet, and the putter was tracked using an 11-camera optical system. While there was no difference in overall putting success between the conditions, there were clear systematic differences in key impact variables and subsequent ball launch characteristics. Golfers tended to aim the offset putter to the left as well as deliver the face more closed at impact. Golfers also tended to deliver the offset putter with more loft. Knowledge of these tendencies could be useful in a putter fitting environment to counteract noted biases in a golfer`s putting performance.
