Acceptance and economic impact of the first COVID-19 lockdown from golf clubs` point of view

(Akzeptanz und wirtschaftliche Auswirkungen der ersten COVID-19-Sperrung aus der Sicht der Golfclubs)

The COVID-19-lockdown had significant consequences for sports stakeholders as all physical sports were stopped. Despite providing safe (i.e., outdoor and social distanced) environment, German golf courses also had to close for several weeks. The aim of this article is to evaluate how high the acceptance for the first lockdown is from the point of view of club manangers. Furthermore, the economic effects are analyzed. We used a standardized online questionnaire to ask sports and golf-specific questions about COVID-19, questions about the short-, medium- and long-term economic impacts of COVID-19 and club-specific questions to evaluate the consequences of the lockdown from golf clubs` point of view. In total, 87 golf clubs completely filled out the questionnaires. The findings indicate that the lockdown had a negative influence on most golf clubs. There were significant decreases in income during the COVID-19 lockdown. The declines were particularly serious in green fee income.
