Physical activity during COVID-19 lockdown in older adults
(Körperliche Aktivität während des COVID-19-Lockdowns bei älteren Erwachsenen)
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
In late 2019, the new Coronavirus disease COVID-19 emerged in China and from there rapidly spread throughout the entire world. In order to contain the exponential growth of COVID-19 cases, most countries imposed a full-scale or partial lockdown. In Bavaria, exceptions to the curfew were going to work, necessary shopping, visits to doctors and pharmacies, assisting others, visits from partners, and exercise outside, either alone or with household members. As a consequence of these measures, the COVID-19 incidence dropped to a low level, so that restrictions were gradually lifted under the condition o f distance and routine hygiene measures. However, since COVID-19 cases resurge, many countries and regions are heading for a second lockdown. In order to be prepared for a new COVID-19 surge to come, we have to understand and analyze problems during the first lockdown. Despite positive effects of infection control, in particular older adults faced an increased risk for secondary health issues, when recommendations for cardiovascular prevention behavior were not achieved during lockdown. Since physical activity plays a key role in cardiovascular prevention,1 we aimed to investigate physical activity levels and the corresponding energy expenditure during the first lockdown in older adults.
