Caffeine and resistance training: A brief review

(Koffein und Krafttraining)

The purpose of this review was to provide strength and conditioning coaches with updated literature on the ergogenic effects of caffeine on resistance training. Fourteen studies were reviewed (four in which a caffeine containing energy drink or supplement was consumed) to determine what influence caffeine has on resistance training. Twelve of the 14 studies revealed performance gains after caffeine ingestion. Overall, caffeine appears to enhance muscular strength and endurance, however, the impact on muscular strength (2.1 - 14.0 %) is minimal compared to muscular endurance (6.0 - 40.0 %). Caffeine ingestion of 110 mg to 7 mg·kg-1 in either capsule or powder form, or as part of an energy drink or supplement, 60 minutes before a training session, can improve muscular strength and endurance for the duration of the training bout.
