Exploring the potential of assessment efficacy in sports coaching - A Commentary
(Erforschung des Potenzials der Wirksamkeitsbewertung im Sport-Coaching - Ein Kommentar)
Sport coaches appear to be making headlines more and more frequently for inappropriate actions and poor coaching decisions. One need look only at the recent allegations of sexual abuse towards notable United States college coaches to begin to question, who is coaching
our children? Couple this information with other examples of coaching behaviors of playing athletes with head injuries, engaging in fisticuffs with other coaches, "icing" their own field goal kicker, and it becomes clear that somewhere, something is lacking. Thus, we must begin to question why and how these instances occur. Can they be prevented? With better coaching education and higher coaching standards and accountability, would athletes be safer? Would teams and athletes perform better? In the absence of stricter standards, required education, and assessment strategies, have we set the bar too low?
