Preanalytical variability: the dark side of the moon in blood doping screening
(Präanalytische Variabilität: die dunkle Seite des Mondes beim Blut-Doping-Screening)
The preanalytical variability is a crucial issue in blood doping screening. Laboratory medicine should hence establish solid interface and feedback with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and other national antidoping organizations. It is important to recognize, urgently, that antidoping testing has several clinical, legal and forensic implications. As for conventional laboratory diagnostics, the implementation of a total quality management system that mandates strict adherence to the best laboratory practice for collection, transport and storage of biological specimens is the most pervasive approach to establish a new culture of reliability and safety in antidoping testing (i.e., primum non nocere).
