A study of strategy associated with the post-Olympiad economy in China

(Studie zur Wirtschaftsstrategie nach den Olympischen Spielen in China)

There is a growing interest in studies involving the Chinese economy after the 2008 Olympic Games. Trends of previous cities that have hosted the Olympics have displayed what is known as the "Valley effect", which describes the drop in the economy after the Olympic Games. By studying the "Valley Effects" of the host cities of previous Olympic Games, there has been interest, as well as a concern, regarding possible economic trends in Beijing during its Post-Olympic period. For example suggestions have been made on how to prevent the "Valley Effect" in Beijing by studying the successful experience of the Seoul Olympic Games. Some of these suggestions, however, have not taken China`s situation into consideration, and therefore, may not be applicable. By studying the characteristics and uniqueness of the Beijing Olympic Games, as well as taking into consideration the theory of scale economy and industry clusters, this study provided some suggestions related to Post-Olympic economic development in China. Methods: Two key methods used for this study were: (a) literature review method and (b) reasoning approach for logic analysis. Results: The results of this study is in three categories: (a) the analysis on the "valley effects" of post-Olympic, (b) the characteristics of Beijing Olympic Games and the historical comparison, and (c) the analysis on the strategy of the development of the Post-Olympic economy in Beijing. It is concluded that, by promoting the prosperity of regional economy, the Olympic Games can make a major impact on economic development in the Beijing area. This development would include both the "Capital economic Circle" and Huabei province district, but is unlikely to incorporate other parts of China. Like the Beijing Olympic Games, there will be many events in the developed districts in China in the next several years. Some of these include: the 11th National Game in Shandong Province in 2009, the Asia Games in Guangdong Province in 2010, and the World Expo in Shanghai in 2010. It is expected that these events will also bring the significant positive effects to the regional economy. Conclusions: Due to complicated economic conditions in China, the impact of the Olympic Games on China`s economy may be limited. Adopting successful promotion of the regional economy according to China`s condition may be a more appropriate strategy for China. It is expected that the "event clusters" and "scale economy" will help create welcome opportunities for the Post-Olympic economy development in China.
