Data mining and knowledge discovery
At the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) we also produce a great deal of information. We are currently making a determined effort to store this information in ways that can be used to record, develop and transform performance. In the last year, two initiatives have helped us start this process:
* the development of a digital repository (a storage facility) for video, audio and data files. This will enable all of the AIS`s sports programs to access information held about them from one central location
* the commencement of using data mining techniques to discover knowledge held in our databases.
Data mining is defined as `the process of discovering meaningful patterns, valuable structures and interesting relationships in large and complex volumes of data, which can be exploited to reveal comprehensible and actionable information` (Fayyad, U et al. 1996. `From data mining to knowledge discovery in databases,` American Association for Artificial Intelligence Magazine, Fall, pp. 37-54). Knowledge discovery in databases takes the raw results from data mining and carefully and accurately transforms them into useful and understandable information.
There is growing interest in the use of data mining in sport to enhance performance.
