The 5th Conference in September 2004 was held at Davis, California, USA. Organised by Professor Mont Hubbard, Dr Rabi Mehta and Dr Jani Macari Pallis the Conference was held on campus at Davis , where 173 papers were presented to delegates from more than 15 countries. The conference witnessed a 50% growth in the number of papers and a broadening of participation to include more industrially affiliated engineers and scientists. Keynote papers were presented from Alexander Smits, Professor, Princeton University, USA "Golf Ball Aerodynamics" Sam Colbeck, retired research scientist at the US Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, USA "Review of Snow and Ice Friction" Art Chou, VP, Research, Development & Engineering, Rawlings Sporting Goods, "The Business of Golf Technology" The organizers have made a special effort to include many sessions with industrial applications in sports and hope to attract many participants with industrial affiliations. There will be sessions on baseball, cycling, fishing, golf, skiing, swimming, soccer, tennis, skiing and winter sports covering subjects such as materials, impact, vibration, fluid dynamics, optimization, robotics, measurement, motion analysis, biomechanics, modeling, dynamics, injuries and rehabilitation, design, shoes and surfaces, and evaluation. The conference is jointly sponsored by the International Sports Engineering Association and the Bioengineering Division of ASME and will be a forum for exploring the interaction of technology and engineering in all aspects of sport. The internationally contributed program from 20 countries will address many of the facets of sports technology. Numerous sessions devoted to special sports topics have been organized.
