Sports drink manufacturer Gatorade has signed a partnership with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) to provide product to AIS athletes and establish a Gatorade sports nutrition fellowship within the AIS Nutrition Department. The recent appointment of the inaugural Gatorade Sports Nutrition Fellow, Nick Petrunoff, is in line with the AIS nutrition department`s ongoing research into sports nutrition and, in particular, the nutrition and hydration requirements of AIS athletes. Petrunoff joined the sports nutrition team, led by Professor Louise Burke, in January 2004. With the Athens Olympics in August and those in Beijing in 2008 set to be possibly the hottest on record, effective hydration for Australian athletes will be a key element in maximising their performance. Dehydration, even in its early stages, quickly affects athletic performance. The Gatorade partnership will also serve to foster relations between the Gatorade Sports Science Institute in Illinois, the United States, and the AIS departments of Nutrition and Physiology.
