The values of serum creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in Korean Olympic athletes during training season
(Die Werte von Serumkreatinkinase (CK) und Laktatdehydrogenase (LHD) bei koreanischen Olympiateilnehmern während der Trainingssaison)
The purpose of this study was to aid medical doctors in treating high-trained athletes during the training season by showing the peak and the mean values of CK, LDH and sGOT. The 677 (478 male, 199 female) healthy national summer and winter Olympic Games athletes were sorted by their 32 events, their average ages are male 22.4 years, female 20.8 years old. Their average periods of athletic careers are male 9.9 years, female 8.7 years. Blood samples were drawn from antecubital vein early in the morning after 15 to 18 hours rest and fast following their daily exercise loads. The serum enzyme activity indicates the degree of physical fitness and damage in skeletal muscles. Because of changing the permeability of cell membrane by various reasons, enzyme leakage is the result of eccentric contraction or intensive exercise for long duration. CK and LDH are two representative physiological indicators of muscular change. The leakage is caused by high tension of muscular shrinkage leading to various physical damage. CK, LDH and sGOT are also released in large quantities into the blood from necrotic heart muscle following myocardial infarction. The reference ranges of CK are male<190 U/l, female<165 U/l, LDH 150¡450 U/l, sGOT 10¡40 U/l by Standard method activated at 37¡É. The mean value of CK was 426.45 U/l (peak value: 3661 U/l in a Rugby player) in male athletes and 245.31 U/l (peak value: 2381 U/l in a Weightlifter) in female. The mean level of LDH was 354.60 U/l (peak value: 769 U/l in a Marathoner) in male and 345.19 U/l (peak value: 691 U/l in a Gymnastics) in female. The mean level of sGOT was within normal range in both athletes. The highest CK values were shown in Wrestling, Rugby and Boxing in order. Long distance runner, Wrestling and Badminton players showed high LDH value also in order. The correlation of CK and LDH was significant (p<0.01). These data could help medical doctors to avoid the misdiagnosis in treating the highly trained athletes in emergency room or in their office. And they could differentiate the values of these enzymes between hard training and heart problems. But these enzymes are easily changed with the effects of different conditions (exercise duration, intensity, mode, temperature etc.). We need more studies with controlled conditions in determining the reference of these enzymes ranges in athletes in various events.
