Pacing strategies for endurance performance

(Strategien der Tempogestaltung für Ausdauerleistungen)

Summary • Pacing strategy is designed to allow optimization of the pattern of energy expenditure, so that the athlete can reach the finish line sooner. • Pacing strategy represents a general balance between a pre-exercise template (based on experience with an event) and feedback from a number of receptors, indicating the magnitude of homeostatic disturbance caused by the exercise bout. • The magnitude of homeostatic disturbance is apparently integrated centrally, and may be expressed quantitatively by the RPE. • There is a predictable and consistent pattern of growth of the RPE during events ranging from a couple of minutes to several hours duration. • Pacing strategy is apparently subject to learning, even in experienced athletes. • The growth of the RPE is apparently interpreted in terms of the percent of a race remaining, and can be expressed in terms of an integrated product, the Hazard Score, which defines the likelihood that an athlete will accelerate or decelerate at any given point during an event.
