Impact of resveratrol on exercise performance: A review

(Auswirkungen von Resveratrol auf die Trainingsleistung: Eine Übersicht)

Introduction: Resveratrol (3,5, 40-trihydroxystilbene), is a polyphenol compound, found in grapes, nuts and red wine. It belongs to the group of chemicals involved in the so-called "French Paradox". Resveratrol improved cardiovascular effects despite the high intake of saturated fats included in "French diet". Facts and results: Our review describes resveratrol in the terms of its impact on the athleticism. Based on recent findings, this polyphenol is involved in the increase of insulin sensitivity, the improvement of body condition and skeletal muscle strength. Resveratrol also participates in mitochondrial biogenesis and reduces the adipose tissue through various anti-adipogenic processes. Resveratrol also works as an activator of SIRT-1; moreover, it reduces the concentration of IGF-1. Conclusion: These facts allow us to assume that resveratrol could be used regularly as a dietary supplement for athletes of many disciplines, especially endurance ones.
