Sleep & sporting performance

Many high-performance athletes are involved in regular, intense training programmes aimed at to stimulating their psychophysiological adaptations in order to improve their capacity for performance. Intense training maximises the role of recovery both in the short-term, between training sessions, and in the medium-term, for example during tapering phases. In the longer-term, sleep also appears to play an important role in preventing the occurrence of overreaching or even overtraining syndrome. it is clear that sleep plays a major role in recovery, which explains why it is considered to be a key factor in sporting success.
