Predicting the time to exhaustion on different altitude levels by the tissue saturation index
(Voraussage der Zeit bis zum Abbruch in unterschiedlichen Höhen mittels Gewebesättigungsindex)
Despite the controversy discussion about the positive effects of altitude training on performance at sea-level, hypoxic training interventions are still a leading factor in the training schedules of international elite athletes. However the high variability of the individual response to hypoxic exposure represents the major problem by controlling the training intensity, because physiological parameters i.e. lactate, heard rate assessed at sea level have different characteristics under hypoxia (Calbet et al. 2003). Nevertheless these variables are used to control training at high altitude. By the fact that oxygen availability is the key performance-limiting factor during hypoxic endurance exercises (Amann et al., 2006) the aim of the study was to establish muscle deoxygenation as a predictor variable for individual reactions to hypoxic exercise.
