Exercise and asthma: A review.

(Bewegung und Asthma. Ein Überblick)

Our increasing knowledge of the underlying physiological and pathological mechanisms associated with asthma is helping to redefine asthma as an inflammatory disease with complex and diverse characteristics. Airway hyperresponsiveness to environmental or other stimuli, as the hallmark of asthmatic symptoms, is now understood to involve a number of acute and complex pathological mechanisms incorporating nearly all cells of the lower airways. Although more research is needed, the role and safety of exercise in those with asthma or asthma-like symptoms are becoming more clearly understood as both safe and beneficial.
