Assessment and detection of the lactate threshold
(Bewertung und Ermittlung der Laktatschwelle)
The issue of Lactate Threshold is a contentious one. Many authors believe it is intimately related to the Ventilatory Threshold, however there is some evidence to suggest that the events are two concurrent responses to the same stimulus, an increase in the work intensity. Through direct measurement authors have determined events in the concentration of blood lactate as they relate to the intensity of exercise. These have been given a variety of terms including Lactate Threshold (LT), Individual Anaerobic Threshold (IAT), Lactate Breaking Point and Onset of Blood Lactate Accumulation (OBLA).
There are also several factors, which may affect the Blood Lactate Concentration (BLC) during exercise. There all effect the bodyís ability to produce and remove lactate during exercise. These include muscle fibre type, substrate availability, caffeine usage training state, altitude and air temperature.
Although the most effective method of testing the BLC during exercise is direct blood lactate assessment via invasive means, there a number of reliable
non-invasive protocols for estimating the blood lactate response to exercise, in a field setting using the sportspersonís actual sports specific skill.
