Efficacy of an innovative virtual-reality training system for breathing techniques: a study of university gymnasts
(Wirksamkeit eines innovativen Virtual-Reality-Trainingssystems für Atemtechniken: eine Studie mit Turnern einer Universität )
This study investigated the effectiveness of an innovative virtual-reality training system (iVRTS) in enhancing breathing techniques, a method in mental training. The iVRTS utilizes virtual-reality technology to simulate real competition settings, aiming to bridge the gap between training environments and high-pressure competitions. Twenty male gymnasts participated in the experiment, with one group undergoing breathing techniques in the iVRTS environment and another receiving conventional breathing techniques. Psychological and physiological responses were measured before and after training sessions. Results show that the iVRTS group experienced greater pleasure and higher activity levels compared with the control group, highlighting the effectiveness of the virtual-reality training environment. However, physiological responses indicated heightened arousal at Time 1, which may reflect an increased engagement with the virtual-reality environment. The study suggests that iVRTS may effectively simulate competition stress and contribute to enhancing psychological readiness in athletes.
