Human Movement Analysis - Gymworld
This three year R&D project aims to use IDT and VR technology to develop an effective motion capture model to analyse and assess human movement. Developed in partnership with the University's Sports Science Centre, Gymworld, the UK Sports Council, Teesside Gymnasts, the British Gymnasts Association and the Regional Gymnastics Development Officer, it will initially assist in the area of sports science. The completed model will have many generic applications within business and industry, the efficiency of movement, production line operations and repetitive strain injury are just some of the potential applications. The initial motion capture model will include virtual reality to provide 3D model "framework" of gymnasts that can be viewed from any angle. The "framework" model will be "fleshed out" to give a more realistic 3D virtual gymnast using computer graphics and virtual environment design techniques. It will provide the ability to analyse movement and the overall performance of gymnasts producing obvious benefits to the gymnasts, judges and coaches. In addition to its use for improving performance, the model could be used to identify and monitor injury and reduce the risk of further damage. On completion, the model will be made available on line to various centres of excellence, gymnasiums and eventually leisure facilities where it can be accessed by an even wider audience. Discussions are already underway to link the motion capture model to other projects within the University's IDT programme for Smells, which will develop its potential for industrial use. It is anticipated that many generic applications will eventually be developed with to assist the growth and development of the region`s SMEs.
