The flow experience in alpine skiing
(Das Flow-Erleben im alpinen Skisport)
Alpine skiing offers manifold opportunities for skiers of all levels and expertise to experience flow. Situational factors—be it the type of slope (e.g., bump piste, groomed slope, off-piste run, racecourse)—but also the difficulty of a run modulate the experience. If pistes fit the skiers` skill level, flow experiences are rather likely. Individual regulative processes play an essential part as well. Especially on groomed slopes, the varying of one`s velocity can shape the flow intensity. Expertise also has an influence on flow states; the more challenging the environmental demands, the more relevant is a solid level of skiing expertise, especially in off-piste skiing. In ski racing, the situational demands are the least variable, hence the occurrence of flow is closely connected to the quality of the athletes` race performance and their skill to flexibly adapt to a set course and tune in to fluent movements. Regardless of the flow intensity and whether the performance was a good one or a bad one, a certain degree of worrying seems to be present in ski racing.
A future goal would be to further expand the scientific basis. With the help of well-planned studies, flow facilitative and flow debilitative components of all the offered slope variants in skiing areas should be analyzed. Apart from velocity measurements and the traffic density on slopes, data referring to turn types and turn radii should also be collected. Concerning psychological factors, future flow studies should routinely incorporate relevant motivational and personality factors. Furthermore, it is of utmost interest to investigate the degree of control of flow states and to what extent flow-facilitative interventions can positively shape flow experiences in alpine skiing. A highly specific but very promising field of activity is ski racing; only a handful of flow studies in ski racing have been published so far.
