Relationship between the characteristics of personality and trait/state anxiety in basic skiing competition players
(Zusammenhang zwischen den Persönlichkeitsmerkmalen und Angst bei Skiwettkämpfern)
INTRODUCTION: In athletics, it is said that athletes' physical and mental conditions immediately before tournaments influence their scores. This study is intended to determine the characteristics of the Personalities of technically oriented skiers, to note the type and degree of anxiety they may experience, and to reveal their psychological features. In order to evaluate the conclusions, the study is cross examined.
METHOD: In this study the subjects are skiers who participated in ski technical competitions such as "The 40th all Japan Ski Technique Championships" held in 2003. NEO-Five Factor Inventory is used to measure the characteristics of the subjects' Personalities, while STAI is used for measurement of their personality features and anxiety. The subjects are cross-examined from two different viewpoints; years of experience and level of skill. Also, athletes in other fields of sports are examined from an experience viewpoint in reference to the results of the subjects.
RESULT & DISCUSSION:
1. In the examination of years of experience, the subjects with more years of experience revealed a lower tendency of neuroses, openness, Trait Anxiety, and State Anxiety, whereas their conscientiousness rated high. (Fig.)
2. In the examination according to the level of skill, the subjects with a higher skill level appeared to exhibit low levels of neurotic behavior, openness, and State Anxiety the night before the game. Those at a lower skill level showed the contrary.
3. Findings through examining athletes in the other fields of Sports upon length of experience are quite contrary to the above. As to neuroses and Trait Anxiety, athletes with many years of experience scored high, while those with short career experience scored low. Regarding agreeableness, athletes with middle length of career tend to mark higher score than those with either long or short experience in their careers.
4. It is thus concluded, based on the results obtained above, that among technically oriented skiers, years of experience and level of skill influence one's characteristics of personality upon competition.
