Eccentric and concentric torque of knee extension and flexion in alpine ski racers
(Exzentrisches und konzentrisches Drehmoment der Kniestreckung und -beugung bei Alpinskiläufern)
INTRODUCTION: Turn techniques in alpine ski is mainly used swing techniques with up-unweight and down-unweight11. These skills are supposed that concerned as a stretch-shortening cycle exercise (SSC) of the lower limbs. SSC is alternatively used to the muscle eccentric action phase and muscle concentric action phase. It expects that specific muscle strength in eccentric action and concentric action development of alpine ski racer21. The purpose of this study investigated of measurement of alpine ski racer's knee extension and flexion muscle strength.
METHODS: Test subjects are consist of 13 alpine ski racers and eight healthy males assigned to the control group (CONT). It classifies into classes. One group is 5 Elite alpine ski racers (Elite ALP) with F.I.S point (two ski races are belonged to Japan national ski team), with remaining eight alpine ski racers (ALP) with no F.I.S point. Peak isokinetic knee extension and flexion torque were assessed using an isokinetic dynamometer at 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240 degree/sec tested in a randomized order, each subject took 3 times trials with enough rest time. With the right leg, eccentric action and concentric action was performed at each knee joint velocity.
RESULTS: Figure 1 shows the measurement of isokinetic knee extension peak torque of the elite alpine ski racers(Elite ALP)group, alpine ski racers (ALP)group, and CONT. From -240 to -30 degree/sec indicates of eccentric muscle strength and from 30 to 240 degree/sec indicates of concentric muscle strength.
DISCUSSION:Tendency shows that eccentric muscle strength indicates higher value than concentric muscle strength among Elite ALP and ALP and CONT. Eccentric muscle strength of Elite ALP and ALP indicates higher value than CONT(p<0.05). On the other hands, concentric muscle strength indicates no differences between Elite ALP and ALP. Eccentric muscle strength is the specificity of muscle action for alpine ski racer and it may have a close connection with performance.
