Alpine skiing and snowboarding training system using induced virtual environment

INTROOUCTION: The proposed ski training System is intended for Alpine skiing and snowboarding training (Aleshin & Danilin, 2002). It is developed on the basis of a unique ski trainer SkyTec Interactive (Trainer SkyTec Interactive) and stereoscopic virtual environment System (Aleshin, Afanasiev, Klimenko et al., 2004). The training System simulates both dynamic loads on a skier and his 3D visual perception of a slope. METHOD: A skier or snowboarder moves on the trainer SkyTec Interactive as if he was turning on a slope. The trainer simulates dynamic loads on the skier caused by centripetal acceleration during a turn. It provides a lateral shift up to 5.5 m and force up to 1500 N. The lateral shift and the edge angle are measured and the data obtained is digitized and transmitted to the virtual environment System. A tracking System can be used to detect the location of the trainee's eyes. The virtual environment System models the skier's trajectory and determines the skier's Position in the 3D virtual environment scene on the basis of the data obtained. The System consists of the following modules: 1. Digital module for transmitting the force values to the electric actuators of the trainer. 2. Digital module for load regulation in interactive mode. 3. Module for synchronization of the location of the trainer's carriage, the edge angle and the skier's Position in the virtual scene representing the 3D model of the slope. 4. Module for modeling turns. 5. Module for determining the skier's position in the virtual scene. 6. Module for scene rendering according to the skier's position. 7. Module for creating a realistic landscape. 8. Module for generating occasional obstacles (skiers, avalanches). The System also includes a module for 3D landscape reconstruction based on movies. RESULTS: The functional prototype of the Alpine skiing and snowboarding training System was developed. It consists of a trainer SkyTec Interactive and a visualization System based on induced virtual environment technology. DISCUSSION: The System allows management of dynamic loads on a trainee depending on the slope conditions and Simulation of trainee's visual perception. The available load range exceeds that of other trainers. The System simulates real Alpine skiing slopes. CONCLUSION: The System can be efficiently used both for novice training and for Professional athlete training.
