Ketogenic diets are beneficial for athletic performance: response to Burke and Whitfield

(Ketogene Diäten sind vorteilhaft für die sportliche Leistung: Antwort auf Burke und Whitfield)

Systematic reviews of 17 (1) and 13 (2) studies conclude that "physical performance can be maintained when consuming a ketogenic diet (KD) compared with control (CON) (1)" and that "moderate-to-vigorous intensity exercise experiences no decrement (in performance) following adaptation to a KD" (2). Following KD adaptation, "endurance-trained athletes experienced no decrement in endurance capacity" during exercise of either moderate (46%-63% VO2max) or vigorous intensity (64%-90% VO2max) (2). Trained gymnasts and taekwondo athletes experienced "no decrement in strength endurance and power, and isometric strength"; resistance trained athletes "maintained 1RM back squat, bench press, clean, jerk and deadlift performance." Performances over 2000-m, 400-m, 100-m, 6-s sprints, 5 × 3-min interval sprints, and Wingate testing were also unimpaired following KD adoption (2). A meta-analysis of 10 studies found that the KD "did not affect aerobic capacity and endurance performance" (3). Professors Burke and Whitfield wish to convince us otherwise. Their account includes three diversionary arguments.
