Partner resisted exercise: improving strength and power without equipment
(Krafttraining mit Partnerübungen: Verbesserung und Kraft und Leistung ohne Trainingsgeräte)
Partner resisted exercise (PRE) is described in the present article as any exercise in which the main resistance comes from a partner. Each exercise is performed in pairs where one individual provides resistance (spotter) and another executes the exercise (performer). The exercises use the spotter`s mechanical advantage or bodyweight to provide resistance in a varied spectrum of intensities. The main advantage of PRE is the fact that only a belt is required to perform the exercises, which provides a solution for low budget training and logistical hindrances such as travelling and respective equipment limitations. The exercises described also present the possibility to employ an intense enough stimulus to represent a valuable addition to professional athletes` strength and power training programs. The main disadvantage is the impossibility to quantify intensity and load precisely. The present article aims to provide a comprehensive selection of partner resisted exercises. Thirteen exercises are described and can be divided generally into upper body pushing, upper body pulling, lower body core/intra-abdominal pressure and fighting exercises.
