Competitive sports in India can be traced back thousands of years as far as to Vedic era in 9th and 8th century BCE (Sen, 2015). The modern form of competitive sports was introduced to the Indian population during the colonial period by the erstwhile British empire in the 17th century CE. However, competitive sports, was affordable only by the elite in the society (Sen, 2015). Although the social exclusiveness of sport has reduced to some extent in the 21st century, its legacy remains. This is evident in the number of elite athletes from the country competing at the international sporting events in the past 70 years, with the majority of these athletes coming from economically well-to-do families residing in the urban regions of India. Despite a long history of involvement in international sport.
