Proposed model to assess an athlete`s physical competency and capacity
(Modellvorschlag zur Bewertung der physischen Leistung und Leistungsfähigkeit von Sportlern)
BLUF
This article proposes a progression model for an athlete through pre-participation screening, movement competency screening, physical capacity testing and exit screening allowing the strength and conditioning coach to assess an athletes` readiness for training and progression of their physical qualities.
The purpose of this article is to outline a proposed model that could be put in place within a sporting organisation to track an athlete from the point of initial contact with the organisation until the athlete leaves the system. It makes specific reference to the areas that are most relevant to the strength and conditioning coach as they relate to the athlete`s health and physical progression. It starts with initial medical and physiotherapy screenings in the Preparticipation Phase with a main aim being to detect cardiovascular abnormalities to prevent sudden death among young athletes [1]. Moving to the Movement Competency Phase where the athlete completes movement based tests with quantifiable outcomes that can act as baseline movement markers from which to prescribe corrective exercises or strategies, and which can be reassessed to measure progress [2]. Thirdly is the Performance Capacity Phase which is concerned more with evidence based quantitative assessment of an athlete`s performance with its primary purpose to set a baseline measure, assess where athletes currently stand in relationship to their own previous results and often to assess the athlete against normative (i.e. group / team) standards [3]. Lastly is the Exit Phase, which is not compulsory, but is recommended as a way of evaluating any injuries that occurred during the training period and examining all regions of the body for any residual issues.
