Athlete Talent identification and development
(Sportlertalenterkennung und -entwicklung)
Talent identification and development (TID) describes the process of an athlete moving into, and/or progressing up, the high performance pathway to an elite or mastery status.
Optimising the development of the athlete pathways of NSOs is essential to grow Australia`s talent pipeline and ensuring sustainable sporting success. This fact was recognised and committed to in the 2012 Australia`s Winning Edge announcement. Accordingly, the ASC will extend the reach of AIS expertise to support ASC recognised NSOs in reviewing and enhancing their athlete development pathways in order to achieve the national high performance targets outlined in Australia`s Winning Edge. Through Australia`s Winning Edge a number of Athlete Pathway Development (APD) Initiatives have been outlined to enhance TID in Australia.
The Foundation Talent Elite Mastery (FTEM) framework consists of 4 macro stages of the skill and performance development of sporting participants which are further differentiated into 10 micro phases. These are Foundations (F1, F2 and F3); Talent (T1, T2, T3 and T4); Elite (E1 and E2); and Mastery (M). TID occurs within the T stages of the pathway.
A strong and ongoing commitment to research is pivotal to informing and advocating TID best practice. A number of research initiatives aligned with APD are currently underway, that collectively enhance our understanding of TID.
