Sport specific conditioning for tennis
(Sportartspezifische Konditionierung im Tennis)
The purpose of this paper is to discuss briefly the meaning of sports specific conditioning, and how it relates to the sport of tennis.
Sample activities for the various phases are given.
Summary:
There are many different levels of specificity, and all levels may be appropriate at specific times in the conditioning plan. In general, the tennis athlete should progress from activities that are more general in nature and perhaps less specific to tennis, and progress to activities that are more specific to tennis. It is possible that many conditioning activities may be appropriate at a given point in the training program. Ideally, the athlete should undergo sport-specific testing at the beginning of the conditioning program to identify areas of weakness. The weaknesses are addressed first in an off-season conditioning program, thus allowing the athlete to obtain greater benefit from the more advanced sport specific exercises that follow.
By understanding these concepts of specificity, the tennis player or coach should be able to modify training activities to make them more specific to the demands of tennis, depending on the phase of training in which the player is currently participating.
For the individual tennis athlete, specific choices of conditioning exercises depend on several factors, including the state of training of the individual athlete, the proximity to an important competition, and the style of play of the athlete or his/her opponents. The value of any exercise is found in the individual's needs and the demands of the sport.
