Anthropometric study of 13/14-year-old handball players

(Anthropometrische Untersuchung von 13- bis 14-jährigen Handballspielern)

A study was made of the body composition, biotype and proportionality of 13/14-year-old members of the Córdoba Provincial Handball Federation. Eighty-five boys were studied (51 aged 13 -junior category- and 34 aged 14 -cadet category). A complete anthropometric study was made following the ISAK protocol. Fat mass was calculated using the formulae developed by Lohman (1981, 1984 and 1986) and Slaughter (1988). Values obtained were processed using specific software (Bodylab and Kin-303) and results were subjected to statistical analysis using the DBaseIII database and the SPSS-PC+ statistical software package. Mean weight was 62.14 Kg and mean height 170.49 cm. Mean biotype was 4.32 - 4.82 - 3.13, i.e. endomorphic-mesomorphic. Inter-agegroup analysis revealed no significant difference in weight, fat mass (using either formula) or endomorphic-ectomorphic components of the somatotype. Significant differences were found for height (p < 0.01) and mesomorphic component (p < 0.05). Analysis of variance performed for mean fat percentages as calculated by each of the two formulae (Lohman & Slaughter) in the total sample yielded highly-significant statistical differences (p < 0.001) although correlation of the two methods of estimating fat mass was excellent and highly significant, indicating that both formulae are valid. Either Slaughter overvalued this compartment by 3.5%, or Lohman undervalued it by 3.5%. This suggests that the same method should always be used in longitudinal studies. When regression was performed for both methods with regard to different skinfolds, the triceps skinfold alone accounted for 94.33% of the variation shown by Lohman`s fat mass, giving the following formula: % Fat Lohman = 3.881012 + 1.096676 x Triceps Skinfold The mid-thigh skinfold alone accounted for 95.6 % of the variation shown by Slaughter`s fat mass, giving the following formula: % Fat Slaughter = 1.304097 + 1.387761 x Mid-thigh Skinfold. Finally, the proportionality of all variables was examined.
