Comparison of water turnover rates in young swimmers in training and age-matched non-training individuals
(Vergleich der Wasserturnoverraten von jungen trainierten Schwimmern und gleichaltrigen Nichttrainierten)
The study investigated, with ethics committee approval, the relative rates of water turnover in a group of eight competitive swimmers (SW; four males, four females) who trained nine times per week swimming approximately 42 km per week, and a group of six essentially sedentary individuals.
This study demonstrates that water turnover rates are higher in young swimmers who exercise strenuously in cool water than in age-matched sedentary individuals. The difference in water turnover rates between the two groups was due to the approximately three times greater non-urine water losses that the exercising group incurred. This suggests that exercise-induced increases in sweat rates are a major factor in water loss in swimmers training in cool water.
