Strength and conditioning for sport

(Kraft- und Konditionstraining im Sport)

There are many factors concerned with the intricacies of strength/power training and subsequent adaptations. These factors include sex differences, optimum loading schemes, complex and contrast exercises, and sequenced loading. While many of the details of the factors are only just now beginning to emerge, there is strong evidence that the manner and phases in which training is presented to the athlete can make a profound difference in performance outcome. The purpose of this chapter is to briefly discuss physiological and performance adaptations to periodized resistance training as well as the periodization of training modes and methods that can enhance specific adaptations. This discussion deals primarily with traditional methods of programming for resistance training. For a more detailed discussion of advanced training methods, refer to Bompa and Haff (38) Plisk and Stone (1), and Stone et al. (2).
