Determining anaerobic threshold training pace for adolescent swimmers

are a number of in-water tests plus previous performance data on which to base AT training intensity. Tests available were developed for adult athletes. Their validity for adolescent athletes has not been established.This study sought to determine whether two such tests are valid predictors of AT training intensity for adolescents. The tests were a 7x200m Freestyle (F/S) Step Test (ST), which involved blood La measurement; and the 12x200m F/S Short Rest Test (SRT). Subjects were state level swimmers, 4 males and 5 females(14.9 yrs; range 13-16). The ST and SRT were administered in a randomized crossover fashion. Each test was followed by an AT training session (4 x 400m, 200m plus 100m) at target pace predicted by the prior AT test, interval paces, [La] and HR were recorded, The ST predicted AT pace of 71.7+6.1 secs/100m was significantly (p<0.05) lower than the 76.83+5.32 secs/100m predicted from the SRT. ST predicted pace was also significantly lower (p<0.05) than the average pace of 78.26+5.93 secs/100m in the ST training session. ST predicted AT [La} concentration (4.58+0.33mM) was significantly higher than the ST training session [La] (2.67+1.26mM), HRs were not significantly different. SRT predicted paces and HR did not differ from the SRT training session values. It is concluded that, for adolescent swimmers, the non-invasive Short Rest Test is a better predictor of AT training paces for than the invasive Step Test.
