Sports measurement and information systems and biomechanical feedback training
(Sportmess- und Informationssysteme und Training mit biomechanischem Feedback)
A measuring and information system (MIS) is a complex technological system that records physiological and biomechanical measurements of specific movement sequences or techniques. MIS are used primarily in competitive and elite sports for performance diagnostics as well as for technique training. Biomechanical feedback training is theoretically based on Farfel`s principle of immediate objective-supplementary information (Bewegungssteuerung im Sport (Movement control in sports), Sportverlag, Berlin, 1977) as well as on cognitive cybernetic learning models.
Three main requirements are defined for biomechanical feedback training: The feedback has to (1) be exact and relevant, (2) be presented promptly and correctly, (3) be usable by the athletes to improve their movement techniques. Another important requirement (4) is the equipment`s influence on the athlete, which needs to be as minimal as possible. Although biomechanical feedback training is widely used in elite and high-performance sports, empirical evidence that proves its effectiveness is rare.
