Introduction The wide application of modern information technology in sport has had an important influence on the development of sport information science. The international studies and exchanges of sport literature and sport information technology were strengthened more and more deeply. With the combination of the modern technology and sport practice, reformation occurred within sport information science. These combinations accelerate the dissemination of the resources of sport information and speed up the development of sport information science. Methods Using a literature study, this paper made a retrieval of research results of sport information science both in China and abroad. Theoretical studies on the construction and targets of sport information science and its practice were analyzed. Thereafter, based on questionnaire, case analysis, expert interview and logical analysis, developing prospects were discussed. Results Along with the popularization of the network, international sport information science has entered into the developing stage of digitization. The sport information association of areas such as Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America, Oceania fully exerted the function of dissemination of sport information. Some projects have been conducted undertaking document digitization. With the establishment of sport information networks, the sport information association has developed many sport databases; applied these databases to build a digital mutual platform, explored the developing mode of the digital sport industry and rationalized the sharing of sport information resources. China`s sport information, started in the 1950s, and rapidly grew in 1980s. Along with the rapid development of a network and information technology, revolutionary changes took place in practical areas of sport information. This development of information became an important sport developing strategy and even the new drive and topic of sport development facing the information society. The study content of sport information science covers every field of sport information, forming the whole scientific system of sport information. Conclusions These findings bring a huge change to China`s sport information science, but compared to the international level, China`s sport information science still faces problems and challenges. These challenges include the breakthrough of sport information theory, the multiple demands and higher requirements to the sport information work and the strengthening of the sport information professional team. Based on the results of the study, several countermeasures are suggested for the future development of China`s sport information science. They are: to strengthen the construction of the sport information network, to realize the information communication and sharing , to strengthen the international communication and co-operation of digitization construction of sport information resources, to strengthen the training of persons with sport information ability, to set down the relevant standard criterion and policies about sport information and to strengthen the protection of intellectual property rights of sport digitization resources. Prospects of the developing of China`s sport information science is also explained.
