Introduction: It is clear that China will have more and more opportunities to hold high-level beach volleyball competitions after the Beijing Olympic Games. As one of the key parts of organizing a competition, the program of sports volunteers and its management for high-level beach volleyball competitions must be dealt with scientifically. Furthermore, the analysis of the management for the Beijing Olympics can provide a useful reference for the organization of future beach volleyball competitions. Methods According to the functions of management and using the methods of investigation and logical analysis, this paper discusses the sports volunteers program and its management for high-level beach volleyball competitions. Results 1. The objective of the sports volunteers` program for high-level beach volleyball competition is to organize the competition according to FIVB standards and provide quality competitive services for athletes and technical officials,. This step is to be accomplished with cooperation between paid staff and volunteers. Paid staff will focus on the designing, organizing, implementing and supervising of the sports volunteers` program. Volunteers only need to focus on positional knowledge and skills. 2. For the Olympic beach volleyball competition, nine volunteer positions are set up. However, for a single event, such as the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, positions excepting field of play attendants, training court attendants and sports equipment attendants can be merged into 2-3 positions. Sports volunteers for high-level beach volleyball competitions should be trained in the areas of general venue knowledge, knowledge of the sport and positional knowledge and skills. Some key positions such as rakers, ball-retrievers and sports equipment attendants should be trained from 7 days prior to the start of the competition for the Olympic Games and 3 days prior for the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour. 3. Organizing volunteers to participate in beach volleyball experiencing matches, awarding certificates for volunteers, inviting advanced volunteers to participate in medal ceremonies and removing those few volunteers who are not responsible for their work are the main governing measures which need to be implemented.
