The effects of jumping in volleyball: Overload damage to the knee

(Die Auswirkungen des Springens im Volleyball: Überlastungsschaden des Knies)

Blocking and spiking are integral and important parts of volleyball training and games. To perform these skills effectively, jumping is required. There is a high incidence of injuries in volleyball, a fair proportion of these occur in the knee. Over the duration of training's or a games jumping is repeatedly performed. It is this repetitious movement that is the concern for coaches, players and administrators. To reduce the frequency of the knee injuries, studies have looked at both internal and external factors. From the research, impact forces and joint moments play a significant role in the cause of injuries. Additional, factors such as playing surface and training periodisation also influence injury rates. These variables therfore have implications in the way athletes train and are coached.
