Relationship between distance runners` aerobic capacity and competitive results
(Beziehung zwischen der aeroben Leistungsfähigkeit von Mittel- und Langstreckenläufern und deren sportlichen Ergebnissen)
The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between competitive results in distance running and aerobic capacity indices determined on the treadmill. 98 middle and long distance runners of medium to high level participated in the study. Two treadmill tests were applied to each subject in order to determine two lactate turpoints (LTs), heart rate (HR) at these LTs, maximal HR and maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max). Training volume and the best results in all running distances subjects had taken part during previous year were also included into the analysis. The analysis of correlation revealed that both LTs and VO2max significantly positively influence competitive results not only in long, but also in middle distance races. The coefficients of correlation between training volume and LTs were 0.532 and 0.414, between training volume and VO2max — 0.450. Maximal HR and HR at LTs do not have any influence upon competitive results. Competitive results in middle and long distance running similarly depend on VO2max and LTs. These indices are positively influenced by training volume, at least in a case of subelite endurance athletes.
