A model of swimming economy during incremental exercise

(Ein Modell der Schwimm-Ökonomie bei ansteigender Belastung)

The purpose of this study was to develop a simple model that coaches could use to assess a swimmer's technique at various speeds. The results of this study, conducted with 20 national caliber swimmers, showed that there is a typical technique response to incremental swimming speed. The technique response was broken down into (a) the rate of increase in stroke rate (SRinc), (b) the distance per stroke at low heart rate (DPSmax), (c) the speed at which distance per stroke begins to decrease (DPSthresh), and (d) the rate of decrease in distance per stroke. Results for a typical swimmer are presented. This model represents a reliable method for evaluating a swimmer's technique and for measuring changes in technique over a season or with various training interventions.
