The Cosmed K5 - invalid for measuring oxygen consumption in the cold

(Das Cosmed K5 - ungeeignet zur Messung des Sauerstoffverbrauchs bei Kälte)

Mode-specific measurements of oxygen uptake performed in the field are helpful to understand and optimize athletic performance. In winter sports, field measurements are challenging due to the low ambient temperatures, in which devices are not validated. Purpose To validate the Cosmed K5 under different ambient temperatures, i.e. 20°C, 0°C and -15°C, during submaximal and maximal exercise. Methods Twenty-one cyclists performed a validation test, consisting of submaximal and maximal exer cise, in the three ambient temperatures. Oxygen consumption was collected simultaneously with the Cosmed K5 and a criterion device, the Cosmed Quark CPET. The Cosmed Quark CPET was situated outside the climatic chamber to protect the device from the cold. A relative difference of 6% was considered acceptable. Mixed linear models were used to evaluate the effect on decreas ing temperature and/or increasing exercise intensity on the agreement. Results The agreement in oxygen consumption falls within the predefined ranges in 20°C during sub maximal exercise (relative difference = -2.5±4%), but the exceeds the predefined ranges when ambient temperature decreases (0°C = -6.4±9.3%, -15°C = -12.4±6.5%, p < 0.001). The agreement is further compromised at a maximal exercise intensity (20°C = -4.3±7.3%, 0°C = -13.2±8.9%, -15°C = 17.8±5.1%, p < 0.001). In 0°C and -15°C, many samples were lost due to obstruction of the sam pling line of the Cosmed K5. Cnclusion The Cosmed K5 is a valid measurement device to determine oxygen consumption when used in 20°C, but currently results in invalid measurements when used in 0°C and -15°C, especially at maximal intensity.
