Moderate vs heavy strength training: what is best for long distance triathlon performance?

(Moderates versus hoch intensives Krafttraining: Was ist für die Triathlonleistung über die Langstrecke besser?)

A progressive strength training program transitioning from moderate to heavy loads may be used to improve performance in long-distance triathletes. The completion of concurrent strength and endurance training improves running economy (RE), cycling economy (CE) and overall performance in runners, cyclists and short course triathletes. The range of physiological and performance improvements are largely due to the variations in strength training (ST) prescription (sets, repetitions, loads). The implementation of concurrent ST to improve the performance of long-distance (LD) triathletes is complex, due to the large volumes of training completed in the three disciplines of triathlon. To date, no research has investigated the prescription of concurrent ST on LD triathlon physiology and performance variables. Therefore, the aim of this investigation was to investigate the effect of a 12-week moderate and a 12-week heavy ST program on CE and RE in LD triathletes.
