Relative energy deficiency in sport
(Relativer Energiemangel im Sport)
Recognizing that sport has a positive impact on health and as a leader of the Olympic Movement, whose first objective is to promote Olympism and develop sport worldwide, the IOC has taken a leadership role to improve athlete health. A recent project of the IOC is the IOC Consensus Statement: "Beyond the Female Athlete Triad: Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S). This project is based on a meeting of world experts in the field held in Lausanne in November 2013. Topics addressed included a scientific update of the field and the development of clinical tools for athlete diagnosis and return to play. Special emphasis is on expanding the concept of the Triad to better address the underlying cause and to include the male athlete who is also affected by the syndrome.
Practical guidelines for clinical application in the 'real world will be included; particularly with respect to screening and return to play will be emphasized. The inclusion of "no start" rules for athletes at risk are defined. The scientific literature on diagnostic evaluation and treatment regimens were critically appraised. Special populations including the male athlete, Paralympic athlete and youth athlete will be addressed.
The new IOC Consensus Statement on Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport and the RED-S CAT (Clinical Assessment Tool) is a practical document for sport health care professionals as well as sport organizations. Through the adoption of the IOC guidelines on this topic, female and male tri athletes can enjoy a healthier sporting experience and long term health benefits from participation in sport.
