Physiological adaptation to translation from one event to another in short triathlon

(Physiologische Anpassungen an den Wechsel von einer Disziplin zur anderen im Triathlon)

The aims of the present investigation were to measure aerobic working capacity of moderately trained triathletes and to study changes in biochemical parameters of their blood during both single events and transition from one triathlon event to another (1 female and 7 males 21.6±5.4 yrs, 1.79±0.09 m, 71.4±5.9 kg, fat % 9.45±4.89, VO2max 56.8±5.7 ml·min-1·kg-1). The transition from (1) swimming (for 20 min, speed corresponding to 90% AT4.0), and from (2) cycling (for 60 min at 90% AT4.0) to running (45 min at 90% AT4.0 level) were studied. The HR was recorded after every 5 min and fingertip blood samples for lactate and glucose were taken after every 15 min during cycling and running. Our results indicated that the lactate concentration in blood during cycling only (p<0.05). The glucose concentration decreased slowly during cycling and running and increased during the transition from cycling to running (p>0.05). Conclusion: the load during swimming, cycling and running corresponding to 90% AT4.0 was realtively low for triathletes who participated in experimental short triathlon events.
